Episode 5

Counting the last five, I had missed about fifty of her calls over the past two days. I didn’t plan calling back either. I put the phone back in my pocket and lay back in my office chair. She had left Kumasi two days ago, or rather was ‘forced’ to leave.

She had been around for almost a week by then, and had shown no signs of wanting to leave anytime soon. It may have been that she was waiting for the money, and not wanting to seem pushy by asking again, chose rather to stay longer than arranged, and hope I would volunteer it on my own. But that wasn’t going to happen. Most especially because not only did I not have ten thousand dollars lying around which I could just give out, and in this case most definitely with no hope of getting it back, but also because there had never been any such intention on my part of giving her any sort of money whatsoever, nevermind dollars.

I had to device a way to get her to leave without it looking like I was forcing her out, because she kept pushing forward the dates. First it was Tuesday, then Thursday, now she was talking of spending another weekend. Something had to be done, and I had an ace to play.

I sent Kwame the text…

“Chale, SOS…we for go Sunyani”

It needed no further explanation, it was a working strategy. Kwame was one of my guys at work, and we had an arrangement between ourselves; whenever one of us needed to get rid of an unwanted guest, a call was placed by the other…and received on loud speaker. She hadn’t seemed pleased when I told her I needed to leave town that evening. She had already heard the conversation I had with Kwame, I made sure of that; making sure to receive the call in her hearing…

“Chale, how be? Boss say some yawa for Sunyani oo…we for go fix um quick before morning else serious yawa”

I acted vexed and frustrated, and even though she was not best pleased herself, seeing as I was equally upset, she couldn’t complain much. I packed a bag, and waited for her to pack hers, and then together we headed for the bus terminal. I paid for my ticket to Sunyani, and then we paid for hers to Accra. We said our goodbyes, with me promising to call her, and got on our respective buses. A few minutes later, her bus was fully loaded and set off. Then I returned my ticket and went back home.

I’m not callous, but Ewurama was the kind of girl who needed to be taught a lesson, the kind of lesson you never forget, and I had been chosen to deliver that experience. During the two to three years I had lost direct contact with her, and whilst she was in school, Rockson had encountered her a few times on campus. On one of these occasions, he had been with a friend of ours, Horla. Horla had expressed interest in her, and though Rockson had warned him off due too her habit of making excessive demands, he still went ahead to make advances, and true to form she didn’t disappoint. She had told him the exact same thing she told me when we first met.

So when Rockson and Horla saw that text I had received from her, there was a clear consensus that something had to be done, and so the plan was hatched. They even chipped in for the plane ticket. She couldn’t keep doing this! Someone had to stop her, and that someone was me.

It had been over a month now since Ewurama happened, It was a Saturday and I had come to Accra for the weekend. I had planned earlier with Rockson to meet up, but his phone had been off for the past three hours. I was home with nothing to do, so I decided to go over to his place anyway. I picked an uber, still trying his line along the way, but it was still off. He lived at Abelenkpe, just about twenty minutes away from me. As we pulled up in front of the house, I noticed a grey corolla move up beside us on the other side of the road. I recognized it as Serwaa’s, Serwaa was Rockson’s girlfriend, or let’s just say one of them. She saw me and came up to the car, ” Is he around? I’ve been calling him for the past two hours but can’t reach him” I told her I didn’t know and hadn’t been able to reach him myself. She went on inside the compound ahead of me whilst I paid the driver.

A few moments later as I was walking along the lawn to the back of the house where his room was, and just before I got to the turn before his door, Serwaa rushed back past me, close to tears. Startled, I rushed towards his room, noticing a pair of ladies’ slippers on the mat in front. Rockson appeared at the door bare-chested, and about to chase up on Serwaa. He looked alarmed when he saw me, and stood in the entrance as if trying to block me from coming in. At that moment, a female voice I recognized shouted out from inside the room, “who was that?”

Then she appeared behind him…It was Ewurama…

Episode 1

I first met Ewurama three years ago, back when I used to work in Accra.

It was a Friday night, and together with Rockson, who was a colleague from work, I was on my way home from an after-work hang out. Rockson was at the wheel, and we were driving through Abelenkpe to join the highway towards the Kwame Nkrumah Circle when we saw her. She was walking in the opposite direction to us, holding a pack of food.

Light skinned with braided her, the reflection from the street lights above made her glow even more. Rockson slowed down as we both tried to get a proper look as she walked by, and then fifty metres ahead he braked…

“chale, make we talk to um”.

We had a brief discussion as to who would speak to her, and then agreed that I should, since my window was closest to her. We reversed and came to a stop a couple of metres ahead of her, and then waited as she walked towards us.

We gave her a lift home, and after taking her number we went home ourselves.

This wasn’t love at first sight, not because she wasn’t good looking of course, but maybe because I was in for something other than love. But she was definitely someone I wanted to see more of though.
The usual dates and long calls followed. She was a nurse who had recently gone back to school to further upgrade her qualifications.

We kept seeing each other occasionally for about a month, and then one day she invited me home. She lived around Dzorwulu, in a single room. We spent the evening snacking and watched a movie.

Halfway through the movie, I slipped my hand down the side of her shorts. She moved my hand away, smiled and then got up from the edge of the bed where she had been sitting all this while. Standing and facing me, she asked what I wanted.

“It’s obvious isn’t it”, I replied,  trying to hide my frustration. Her brows furrowed as she replied, “Sex”?

I scoffed, “no, not that,… I want a relationship”

She stood quiet for a moment, and then moved to the wardrobe in the corner and began folding some clothes.

She stayed by the wardrobe for the rest of the time I was there. I left thirty minutes later, but not before she had accepted my proposal, albeit with a few conditions;

It was simple, all she expected from any guy who wanted to go out with her was that he would take care of her expenses; which she listed below as follows…

Her school fees ( First Degree Nursing)

Rent

Provisions.

And also, she needed a television and airconditioner…

Episode 2

It was simple, all she expected from any guy who wanted to go out with her was that he would take care of her expenses; which she listed below as follows…

Her school fees (First Degree Nursing)

Rent

Provisions.

And also, she needed a television and air conditioner…

“Siasem”

Those were the first words that came to mind, and I was just short of saying it out loud, but I restrained myself and kept an unfazed composure.

At this point, the only thing worse than her list was the fact that she seemed to think she was perfectly within her rights to demand such things!

Truth is I wasn’t the least bit fazed, I had found myself in similar situations many times before, and the template was always the same; play along for a while, flash a few Cedis or create such an illusion to draw her in, and then once she thought she had sucked you in deep enough, you struck first, leaving a clean pair of heels behind you; Classic sucker punch.

This was a previously tried and tested method, with a hundred percent success rate so far, but with Ewurama, I had hit a snag I hadn’t bargained for. She was no novice to this game, in fact she seemed to be so experienced that for each card I played she seemed to have a pack of aces waiting up her sleeve. To start with, I think she realized I wasn’t your average “mugu”, and so played a very patient game with me. What she didn’t know was that I was the spirit of patience itself; I could play the devil to the waiting game and would win.

Days stretched to months and soon enough a whole year had gone by, and all we had done together were a few pizza dates, a couple of visits to the movies and I think that was it.

If she thought I was actually going to pay her fees, when I was scarcely able to afford my own further studies, she had gravely misjudged me, because from the moment those words left her lips, I had determined not to fall victim to this rare species of gold digger.

Naturally, with me not fulfilling the terms of her contract, and with her not giving me any real pressure, we drifted apart, so far apart that it had been over a year we had heard from each other, when I got her text.

“Hi honey. Hope u good? I Know I’ve been a bad partner but I’ve been so busy with some stuff. I’m a bit free now so I thought it wise to contact you so we talk. Forgive me, but I’ve always loved you.”

I instantly recognized this as a scam of some sort, but a part of me felt I had a bit of unfinished business to carry out, and so I responded, and decided to take the game to her this time. I had to act quickly; I was in Accra for the weekend and was due to return to Kumasi the following day.

The plan was to convince her to come along with me, but in order for it to work, I had to create the illusion of me flashing the Cedis around, “abi you know dada”?

Knowing she probably wouldn’t want to travel the long journey by coach, and knowing her taste for the high life, I called in a few favours and managed to get two Star bow tickets to Kumasi.

True to expectation, she didn’t sound at all enthused when I suggested a coach ride to Kumasi. However, when I chipped in the fact that I had two air tickets booked for the purpose, she suddenly became very interested in the trip.

I made the necessary “preparations” both in Accra and in Kumasi for when we arrived; I had a pick up waiting at the airport with my “driver” on standby to take us home. It is in such situations that the most invaluable friends play the most crucial of roles.

On arrival, we were chauffeured first to get her pizza and chicken and then home. When we got home, there was a “messenger” waiting for me in front of my flat with a special order of ice cream for the lady. At this point you could almost touch the admiration in her eyes. I must admit I was mightily impressed myself at the level of first rate acting my most reliable of lieutenants came up with to create such a perfect illusion of affluence and extravagance, which was so crucial to the task at hand.

I escorted her inside to the bedroom and then took leave to see the “driver” off. Back downstairs and in the pick-up, we were joined by Frank, my supposed “messenger” who couldn’t keep back his laughter, ” herh, but chale she fine oo” Sarpong, who was my “driver” agreed with him, ” the chic fine muom” …

We had a good laugh together and then I left them to go back upstairs.

I could hear her in the shower as I entered the hall. It was rather hot inside and so I took off my shirt and with a mixed feeling of excitement and expectation, I headed for the bedroom.

Episode 3

Flicking the airconditioner switch on, I dragged my shirt back over my head and then flung myself onto the bed.

I pulled the curtains closer together to darken the room even more, and then switched the television on. I tuned into a movie channel, and lay my head back on the pillows staring up at the ceiling. After a few moments of blankness, I noticed the shower had stopped running; this meant she was done and would be back in the bedroom any moment. I quickly pulled off my jeans and dragged a pair of shorts on. Opening the wardrobe I fingered around a little before I found what I was looking for; I quickly ripped the pack open and pulled a packet out, stuffing it quickly into my back pocket. It was at that moment that she walked in from the bathroom dressed up in a pair of shorts and a see through black spaghetti-strap top.

Walking towards me she gave me a hug before lying down on the bed and rolling towards the edge against the wall. She turned a quick flash towards me before reaching for the cover cloth and slowly pulled it over her body, and then finally over her head.

laying down beside her I slid my hand beneath the sheets, resting it on her knee, and then with my other hand, I turned her over. She rolled over, seemingly a bit hesistant, and stared me in the eye for a few seconds. By this point my hands were rubbing on her thighs, inching up from the starting position on her knee. She had started squirming and making little sounds of pleasure now, but as I reached my hands further up, she reached down and held my hand tight, moving them away from the zipper and button on her shorts.

I moved my hand and rested it on her shoulder, gently playing with the strap of her top. She had a cold, hard look on her face, but her body movements beneath the sheets betrayed her demeanor.

In other words, her body seemed willing, but her mind wasn’t…or was it?

I slid the strap gently down her shoulder, playfully tickling her along the way. Her eyes closed as she let out a gentle sigh. With my other hand I gently slid up her top, revealing her belly button, with which I started to play. But again, just when it seemed she was ready to let herself go, she again stopped me by holding my hand which had wandered from on top of her navel back down to her shorts button. She turned to face me again, and as she did I cupped her chin in my hands and drew closer towards her lips, her eyes closing as my lips touched hers. They were soft and wet, and her hands reached out to hold me around the neck drawing me even closer. But as my chest touched her breasts, she again seemed startled by something and pushed me slowly away. It was as if something was on her mind and bothering her. She didn’t keep me wondering any longer though,

“baby, I need a favour”, I nodded for her to continue, “I need ten thousand cedis for a project”.

I almost gagged, but kept a cool face.

“what for”? I could barely conceal the giggle almost coming out of my mouth.

“For a project I’m starting, just let me know if you can get it for me, I will give you the details later”.

In my mind, I was shaking my head, but I nodded at her and said I would see what I could do. She smiled and gave me a kiss on the cheek, ” even if it’s less, eight thousand ‘koraa’ I can manage it.”

I smiled at her and replied, “no worries baby, I’ll see what I can do”, and then slid my hand back into the sheets, this time reaching straight for the zipper, and with my lips I reached for the spaghetti strap on her shoulder, licking her gently as I rolled it over her arm. She didn’t resist this time as I pulled the zip all the way down, undoing the button as well. By now my tongue was in the gap between her breasts and her moans of delight were louder now than just a few sighs.

Gently slipping down her shorts with one hand, and expertly sliding up her top with the other, I definitely gave a new angle to the meaning of ambidextrousity.

With her shorts on her ankles and her top all but off her body, I was startled when she again held my hand and gave me another push; do you have protection?

I smiled to myself as I reached into my back pocket, “of course I do”

Episode 4

I woke up to a warm feeling, with beads of sweat dripping from my face and chest. It was pitch dark outside. Peering through the curtains I realised even the street lights were out.

Must be another blackout I thought to myself.

That explained why I was sweating so much, because the air conditioning was off.

Ewurama rolled over briefly, startled out of her sleep by my movement. It took a few seconds for me to focus my orientations, and then my mind went back to the night before; the excitement, and then the anti-climax.

“do you have protection?” … “of course I do” …

We were both almost naked now, and enthralled in the throes of passion. Arms wrapped tightly each other with just the final act of love to bind us closer, and then that’s when she bailed out…

“No” … Initially I ignored her barely audible protests, mistaking them to be disguised implorations for me to carry on…But it soon became pretty clear that she wasn’t playing around when she said,

“NO! stop it”, pushing my hand away from in between her legs, she turned awayfrom me, “let’s sleep” I’m tired…

I peered through the dark to see if her eyes were closed. They were, I tried rolling her towards me to see what her reaction would be. She was stiff, and apart from a slight shrug of her shoulders, she wouldn’t budge. From the angle of the moon, and the distant crows of a cock, it must have been early dawn. I dragged myself to the bathroom and washed my face, then went to the hall. I wasn’t sleepy enough to go back to bed, and going to lie beside her again might just arouse me once more. I propped myself up against the wall and slid down to a sitting position and closed my eyes.

A few moments later I was startled by the feel of soft hands on my shoulders and a voice asking, “are you ok”?

Ewurama, perhaps wondering why I hadn’t come back to bed had come to see what was wrong. She wrapped her hands around my neck, biting gently on my ears, “baby, you remember the favour I asked you for? something came up, I need a bit more than that”.

I closed my eyes tightly and then opened them back after a minute, turned to look at her and said, “talk to me”.

“I need ten thousand dollars”.

I almost choked on my saliva.

The ten thousand cedis ‘mpo’, I had no idea where I could get such money, now dollars!

I paused for a moment, flicking my fingers and rolling my eyes, as if to suggest I was trying to figure something out. Then feigning interest, I turned back to her, “what exactly is this project about”?

Then she started on about a boutique she was starting, and that she had all the plans in place, and had even almost completed furnishing the container, and now all she needed was money to get started.

“I see, but ten thousand dollars is a lot of money, I don’t have that kind of money”. I noticed her brows twitch a little as she replied, “don’t worry baby, how much can you get me for now”? I stalled for a moment before replying, “I’m not sure yet, I need to check my investments, can you give me a week”? Excited she clung to me tighter, let’s go back to bed. I dragged myself of the floor and together we made our way back to the bedroom. The electricity was still out but the moonlight had begun to filter in a bit more, and so it wasn’t as dark as it had been, even though it was still as warm. She pulled me closer towards her as we got to the bed and looked me in the eye, “baby, are you sure about the money”? I looked straight back at her, “I promise baby, anything for you”. She leant forward on me, the unexpected reaction pushing me back on to the bed. I held her tight, as she reached into my shorts and grabbed me. Then she leant forward and started to kiss me. This time as I reached for her zipper and slid her shorts down, she willed me on, grabbing harder between my legs. I was sweating more than ever now, not from the heat, but the excitment.

The moon it seemed in its silver glow, was rooting for me as it shone its dim and gentle light through the gaps in the curtains.

This time she didnt even ask for protection, but I still had it in the back of my pocket.

As I slid in gently, the crowing cock in the distance let out an approving “cock-a-doodle-doo”!!!

Episode 10: Season Finale…

Even though this was the second time she had done this, it somehow felt different this time around; there was a lot more conviction in her voice for one, and it seemed she had given it a lot of thought. She sounded strong, and looked determined when she stared into my eyes without blinking. Perhaps most telling, and that which condemned my heart to defeat, were my own instincts. They told me this was real, and not to fight it, and so I didn’t…well at least eventually.

The first few days were unimaginably difficult. She still called, to ‘check up on me’, sent me messages on Facebook and WhatsApp, and generally tried to keep the lines open. But try as I did, I just couldn’t act tough. I soon found myself begging for a proper explanation; what was wrong with me? Did I do some things she didn’t like?…But she wouldn’t budge, she just kept saying the same things; that we just weren’t right for each other…whatever that meant.

Soon I was asking her to reconsider her decision, which she insisted she couldn’t. It was a painful couple of days which tested my emotional fortitude to the limit, and then miraculously, because I hadn’t expected it to be so soon, I was suddenly able to blank out most of the thoughts and memories.

I still think about her every now and then, and we even met up a few months after for dinner, but it wasn’t the same.

Sometimes I wonder what could have been, but I guess some things are just not meant to be.

And Ekua wasn’t…
It wasn’t soon after that I moved on, and the story I’m going to tell you next has some rather incredulous details, some which may seem exaggerated, but which I assure you, are accurate to the very last last detail.
It was the last day of the Easter holidays, which I had been spending with my parents and brother somewhere in the Eastern Region. It was late evening and we had just finished the usual holiday ritual of fufu and light soup, when my phone started ringing. It was Ewurama. I muted it, lay my head back on the pillow, ignoring the subsequent vibrations which meant she was still calling.

I woke up some minutes later realising I had dozed off. Checking my phone, I saw I had a few whatsApp notifications including one from Ewurama…

“Hi honey. Hope u good? I Know I’ve been a bad partner but I’ve been so busy with some stuff. I’m a bit bit free now so I thought it wise to contact you so we talk. Forgive me, but I’ve always loved you.”

This was strange, especially since I hadn’t  heard from Ewurama in over a year, but knowing Ewurama, I think I knew what she was up to…

Watch out for season 3!!!.

Episode 4

“Ewurade!..Obaa yi huo fɛ”…long legs, smooth face…nufuo aa nufuo…ɛtuo nso aa ɛtuo…asɛm bɛn koraa nie!

I was on my way out of the faculty where I had gone to check some results, and was headed downstairs when she crossed me. I tried to catch her eye, but she just sort of floated by. She looked in a hurry.

Maame was even more beautiful than I remembered, but from the way she looked at me, and then quickly away again, she sure didn’t remember me.

Yao was waiting for me at the car park, it was a few minutes to four, and we needed to get to the Safaribet office in time before they closed at five.

He leaned out of the window of the wine Pontiac Vibe as I approached, “Chale, look sharp, ‘e’ lef small six go clock wey I for take Karim ein car go give um”. And then suddenly he grabbed me by the arm, “Frank… hwɛ! hwɛ! hwɛ!, It was Maame, she was coming down the stairs.

“Chale, the chic fine oo”…

“The Maame girl ‘nu’ dat oo”, I replied but Yao had already moved the car in her direction.

I was trying to tell him that I had already given her number to my friend Sarpong, but he either wasn’t listening or didn’t want to listen.

“Ohemaa, na ɛda ɛhe”? He asked, smiling as he pulled up beside her. She smiled back and said she was headed for the Great Hall, which was on our route anyway.

“Chale Frank, abi you dey go the lecture ?
Drop for here make I go drop madam”.

Yao had just pulled a classic on me! Today holiday paa, wey lecture?!

I opened the front door and got out, allowing Maame in.

“Yao paa, he fool oo”, I thought to myself as I started the walk to the hostel.

It was a good thing Yao and Sarpong didn’t know each other because just last week I had given her number to him to try his luck. For fifty Cedis of course…

“Abi me dierr I do my part…whoever do wild go chop”, I chuckled to myself.

We might have stayed in that couch till morning had her mum not started calling. I accompanied her on the taxi ride home. She seemed ok now even though she still wouldn’t say what had happened to her.

We parted with a hug after which I placed a quick kiss on her lips. She smiled shyly as she walked to the door. “Call me when you get home”, she stood at the door waving as I entered the taxi.

On the bus trip back to Kumasi the next morning, there couldn’t have been a happier man on board. Each time I closed my eyes to catch a nap, I ended up reminiscing about the sweetness of the night before.

Then came Yayra’s call. The ‘dumsor’ story had worked its magic the night before; she had texted back hoping ‘I hadn’t sweated too much in the heat’, and now was calling to ask when I would be back because, ‘she missed me’.

This was some conundrum I had gotten myself into wasn’t it?

I arrived in Kumasi just before evening and went straight home.Yayra came over from her room and we watched a couple of movies together, and before we knew it, we were all over each other. She ended up spending the night.

Her hands shuddered slightly as she run them over my head and down my neck. I lay one hand on her lap, pressing down on her thigh.

Sometimes a kiss is really worth its price in gold, and that’s exactly how I felt kissing Ekua. For more than twenty minutes we just lay there, our lips locked together. I had waited three months for this and it was every bit of what I had imagined.

I snapped out suddenly as Yayra playfully tickled my arm and sat up in the bed, “I need to go and have my bath” She said. I sighed, stretched and threw myself back down…

I was with Yayra but still thinking about Ekua…The events of the previous night would just not leave my mind….

Thank God it was a holiday and I didn’t have to go to work. Yayra said she was meeting up with her boyfriend later on campus; they were still trying to work things out and he wanted to see her.

I needed to do a few things myself on campus so I planned to borrow Karim’s car later on in the day.

I was just wrapping up on campus when Frank called and asked me to come pick him up. We had planned to go place some bets for the evening games. But by a twist of fate which only the gods could have ordained, I ended up with Maame in the front seat and Frank on the sidewalk, left to fend for himself.

Maame was pleasant company I found, as I went to drop her off. I promised to call her after taking her number and then we parted…

I had almost reached my hostel when I decided to make a detour through The Republic Hall for a bottle of beer. At the JCR, I headed for the bar.

“Herh Frank, what you dey do for here” I turned around and there was Sarpong at the pool table. “what be the action my guy “?

Sarpong and I were friends from way back, and we were both completing our master’s courses over here.

Sarpong excused himself from the pool table for a second as he led me to some seats at the other end of the room, “Chale, abi I tell you about that my girl bi nu”? he gestured towards the far corner.

“Which one “? I quizzed, genuinely confused (Sarpong, like many of my friends had quite a few ‘girlfriends’, many of whom I had never met)

As we reached the end of the room, he tapped the shoulder of a girl who was sitting with her back facing us, “baby, meet my friend Frank” she turned around smiling to greet me.

I froze…It was Yayra!

Episode 3

Before I could let out a scream, he held his arm across my mouth to stifle it, but I kept on trying and he panicked; quickly letting go of me. It was as if a sudden realisation had come over him as tears welled up in his eyes, dropping his head in his hands and banging on the dashboard in frustration. I tried to open the door again, but it was still locked. He tried to hold me, “please stay in the car, I’m sorry”…I pushed his hands off me, ” please just open the door before I scream again”, almost shouting, I choked back my tears and started banging on the windows.

Styles, his hands shaking, reached for me again pleading, “Ekua, I’m sorry…please don’t tell anybody”. I pushed his hands off still fidgeting with the door knobs. He unlocked the door and got out first, moving to my side. Before he could get there however, I had already opened it and started running. He followed me at a brisk pace. I didn’t know what I was doing…I just kept running; as far away from him as possible. There were a few latecomers and early leavers hanging outside the club…

Should I tell them what had just happened inside Styles’ car? or should I just go home?

The tears were rolling uncontrollably down my face now. I stopped to catch my breath, but Styles was right up behind me.I started screaming at him to stay away from me and not to come any closer. My car was just a few metres away and I headed for it, reaching into my bag for my keys…I couldn’t find them.

They weren’t in my purse either! My brother would kill me when he found out I had lost his car keys. Maybe I had dropped them in the struggle in Styles’ car, but I wasn’t going back there. Styles had kept his distance now but was still a few feet away just standing there. The club hadn’t closed yet, but quite a few people had started leaving and it was getting busy outside. I stopped one of the taxis passing by, sat in and asked him to move… “Where to Madam “? He asked.

I wanted to go home, but I wasn’t thinking straight…”Please just take me away from here”…I was sobbing. I picked my phone and dialled…

I stood there watching her as she drove off. How could I be so stupid…”Bɔrla woman”?!…I hit my head with my palm and kicked on the metal gate.

It was the first thing that came to me when she asked, and inexplicably I had said it. What was already a tough job of getting her to like and trust me had just gotten impossibly difficult.

“But she ‘sef’, where was she going”? I thought to myself. “Who was she meeting at this time of the night”? My heart had sunk, and was refusing to come back up; I had two things to worry about now…

I sat there on the pavement calling and calling…but she didn’t pick up. Of course she wouldn’t, not after the dumb stunt I had just pulled. But I wanted so much to get my story straight with her; not tell her about Yayra of course, but at least get a respectable and believable story in place. I kept calling, five …six…seven…times..and three more, then I gave up; she wasn’t going to pick up.

Then I remembered, I had one more thing to worry about; Yayra!…

I had switched my phone back on as soon as Ekua had dropped me off, and then her text messages had started dropping in…Many of them very accusatory in tone. Which was quite understandable given that my phone had gone off only after she had started calling…’Dumsor’ was my most likely excuse here, but I needed to start preparing an acceptable ‘B’ story if things got out of hand.

It was too late to call her back so I sent her a text saying I was taking a shower at the time, and since the electricity had been off, I had a low battery which eventually died out on me.

I tried to sleep, but couldn’t; I kept wondering who Ekua was with.I dozed in and out a bit but couldn’t maintain enough calm to fall asleep. Then just when I had finally managed to fall off, my phone vibrated…It was Ekua!

I rubbed my eyes, then picked up the phone…She was sobbing,”Yao, please come and get me…I’m at the office”. I tried to probe further but she just kept sobbing till finally I told her to hang up and that I was coming.

Now, there was an issue…a big one…I didn’t have a car,and given the time, it was going to be extremely difficult to get a taxi from here. My only option was to go to Circle which was about three kilometres away; so I began to jog…A few minutes into my jog, the lights of a taxi appeared ahead of me,

lucky me.

The roads were clear so we arrived in under 15 minutes. I walked up to the security gate and spoke to the security man. Ekua had already spoken to him and so he let me in, then I made my way in, up the stairs and into the same office we had been in on my birthday.

Ekua sat huddled on the couch, and was still sobbing. I sat beside her and held her close, “What’s wrong”, I asked”. She wouldn’t talk but just kept sobbing. Rocking her slowly, I wiped her tears with my handkerchief and spoke gently into her ears. After a while she was calm enough to talk and told me it was nothing serious and just a personal matter. I was sceptical but didn’t ask any further questions. By now it was almost Two AM. I stood up and gently lifted her to her feet, pulling her towards my chest as I held and comforted her, “whatever it is, you will be fine”.

She sighed and then nodded OK, and then fell back into the couch, pulling me back down beside her. Soon we were lying side by side facing one another, her face barely an inch from mine. We gazed into one another’s eyes in silence. I tightened my grip on her waist and inched her slightly closer. She closed her eyes and didn’t turn away. A thousand emotions run through my veins as I looked to her for a sign, but her eyes remained closed. I cupped her chin gently in my other hand and drew her mouth closer, she didnt resist. I drew it closer and closer till her lips touched mine…Only then did she react; placing her hands around my neck and drawing me in.

So on the very same couch where it all began, our lips became one…

Episode 2

“Bɔrla woman?…this boy paaa…he thinks I’m a fool eh!…Mtcheeew!…Bɔrla woman!!!”…

“so annoying” I kept thinking to myself, muttering in anger at his explanation.

I hadn’t even planned to ask him about that thing koraa, till he started receiving those calls. If it was really his cousin, why didn’t he just pick up and tell her something? My instincts told me that it must have been whoever it was who had been in his room that day, I was so pissed!

I swerved suddenly as a stray dog jumped in front of me. What was I even doing driving to Osu at this time of the night? It was  a good thing my dad had travelled, and my mum believed my prayer meeting story. My phone kept on buzzing at the back. It had been ringing for the best of the past ten minutes. I cranked my head back again just to check, it was still Yao…turning back to focus on the road ahead, I pressed down harder on the accelerator.

The last time I saw Styles, he kissed me. He caught me by surprise on that occasion, and had profusely apologised immediately after. Not that I particularly minded the kiss; it felt good, but he was married for God’s sake. Not that he tried to hide it or anything; he wore his ring with pride, but there was this thing about him which made him irresistible. Styles had seemed the perfect gentleman, never did he try to make a move on me, he didn’t even call me till I called, and he was so smooth.

But since that little kiss everything seemed to have changed so quickly. He called me everynight, and sent me text messages, and every now and then would pass by the office and bring me lunch.

Admittedly, I needed a bit of a distraction; with my suspisions about Yao and all that, God knows I needed a break, and Styles provided just that. It was so much easier ignoring Yao most of the time now, because I had Styles to look forward to. I knew I ought to have been a little more cautious around him, but I let my guard down, and for the past week had found myself entangled in his world. Then he asked me out for the night, but I couldn’t, I had already promised to go out with Yao, and this was perhaps the best opportunity for him to clarify things.

So I had gone out to the beach with Yao instead that night. I thought if I gave him a cold shoulder and attitude I might get him to start talking and come clean. But as girly as I was, there I sat acting the bitch, and giving no explanation for my attitude whatsoever, even when he asked.

Those phone calls were the last straw though;

“cousin indeed…Mtcheeew…and then bɔrla woman!!!. Ah!…ah!…ah!….Mtcheeew”!

I had planned to go straight home after dropping Yao off, and even though I had an excuse good enough to last me till at least Two A.M, I wasn’t in the mood to stay out any longer with him, and then Styles had called. He always cheered me up did Styles, and his deep smooth voice had the subtle effect of calming me down too. He wanted to meet me at Hot Gossip night club in Osu. I had never been there, in fact I had never been to any night club before; I was a good girl…I think.

I wanted to see Styles, but wasn’t too sure of the venue. But he had sounded so calm and relaxed when we talked over the phone. I’m sure it was just for a few drinks and a chat, I should be home long before Two.

He was waiting for me in his car parked by the street near the entrance. He walked over to where I had parked mine, just over on the opposite side. He hugged me; he had his sweet scented cologne on, and then led me to the entrance.

It was loud and a bit stuffy; there was a lot of cigarette smoke in the air, and it stung my eyes. Several scantily dressed ladies stood around the bar and cocktail tables. In the middle some men were playing pool or snooker (I’ve never really understood the difference)We sat in a corner which was partly secluded from the rest of the floor and he ordered some drinks; 2 shots of tequila and lime for him and a bottle of coke for me. We watched the guys playing at the tables, and laughed whenever somebody missed a ball. I’m not much of a fun person, so when he asked me to dance I declined playfully and rather just allowed him to rock me side by side where we sat, with his arm around my shoulder.

I wasn’t too comfortable here and perhaps Styles noticed this and soon after he asked me if I wanted to leave. I stood up nodding, and he followed suit.

Once outside, he walked me to my car, and then asked that we walked back to his because he wanted to give me something inside his.

His windows were dark tinted and though from the inside we could see those outside, they couldn’t see us. Styles held my hands and pulled me closer to him looking to kiss me, this time not in surprise. At first I found myself leaning in but stopped short…

“Ekua! For Christ’s sake, he’s a married man”…I struggled inside my head, but he insisted and still pulled me closer, “Styles please…No”, I pleaded as he again tried to kiss me. Then he held me by my waist and tried to lift me over to the driver’s side where he had created room by moving his seat back. I resisted and then tried to open the door and get out, but it was locked. I tried again but his car seemed to have a locking system which only he could operate. He tried lifting me again, and despite my protests and resistance he was able to, and lifted me onto his front with my back facing him. He then began to grope me whilst pinning me down with his arms and feet. I tried shouting out but my voice was hoarse and dry, and I choked back tears as he continuously tried to kiss me again, by which time one of his hands were beneath by dress and the other trying to pull down the zipper at the back of my dress.

I was in distress , and struggled wildly, but he was just too strong. Tears were dripping down my cheeks now and in one final effort of desperation I opened my mouth to let out a scream….

Episode 1…

located on the same luxurious stretch of beach as The Labadi Beach and La Palm Royal hotels, Kumasamba Labamba was as cosy and quiet as Night beaches come; serene and with an excellent view of the coast from the bar.

I had arrived in Accra a little before five AM and headed straight home from the VIP station. As I lay in bed I reminisced…

Yayra…What a sweet night it had been. We might have been locked up together far longer than the thirty minutes that we were, had the security man not come snooping around. Yayra had felt uncomfortable because of the sounds coming from outside the door; Seidu had chosen that exact opportune moment to eat his supper directly outside my office door.

Soon after, as we left the building together, hands wrapped tightly in one another’s, she looked shyly up at me, “So what are we”?

I squeezed her hands assuringly,”What’s up with your boyfriend”?

Her face contorted a little, “Why are you asking me that”?

“Eii! I don’t want anyone to beat me oo”, I giggled slightly, ” I would really like to date you but you need to sort things out with him first”, I continued…She turned to me, “I still love him, I’m confused”

“Take your time dear, I’m here for you”, I assured her before stopping a taxi to take her home. Then I stopped a trotro to take me to the Asafo market to pick a bus to Accra.

Sitting on bench waiting for Ekua to arrive at the beach,my mind went back to my conversation with Yayra the night before…

“What’s up with your boyfriend”?, I had asked.

‘Herrrh, but chale, I get format oo”…I sniggered to myself”…”Make she stay where she dey naa, make I dey clear for side small small”

Ekua was running a bit late, it was a cold night, and the droplets of sea water showering on my face felt good even as I rubbed my palms together to keep them warm.

I ordered a bottle of water as I waited, admiring the spectacular view of the waves splashing up against the shore.

A few minutes later, the dark was illuminated by the headlights of salon car pulling up behind me in the carpark. Just then, my phone chirped,

“I’m Here”

Ekua looked lovely in an African print dress, with a shawl wrapped around her shoulders. I walked up to her and hugged her tightly before leading her to a bench up on some rocks overlooking the beach.

We ordered a malt drink each and a plate of fried yam and chicken to share. We didn’t talk much; we sat with her head resting on my shoulders and holding hands, taking in the nice view and cool breeze.

I attempted breaking the uneasy silence once every often by making comments about the beach, the food, and even the stars…(pointing at one very obvious star, I asked, “isn’t that a plane”?…)

It was almost as if she wished she didn’t have to be here, and would rather be elsewhere. This definitely wasnt the kind of romantic beach hang out I had envisaged a week ago.

I leaned closer to her, my cheeks almost against hers, but she held her hand up and gently pushed me away. I put my hand around her shoulder and though she didn’t ask me to take it off, she made no reciprocal reaction whatsoever.

“Is everything ok”?, I asked. “Yeh”, she responded with no emotion. “Do you want another drink”?, I tried again. “No” was her response. Getting frustrated, I asked again, “are you sure you are alright”? She nodded without a sound. I stood up to stretch my legs a bit and motioned to the waiter for the bill. Then my phone rang. I brought it out to check; ‘Yayra’. I muted it and placed it back in my pocket. It rang again, and again…and again…each time I muted it. Then it rang again, “Pick it up eh”? Ekua said looking up at me.

“Oh, don’t worry, it’s my cousin, she is worrying me for money” I replied and sat back down waiting for the waiter. Then it rang again, this time I muted it without even taking it out of my pocket. But Yayra wouldn’t give up and kept on ringing, each time I had to keep silencing it.

“Just pick up and tell your cousin something eh”!…Ekua burst out again.

In my head, I was going frantic with anxiety…

‘Chale, Yayra koraa nso adɛn?! She should wait small let me get home koraa eh…tsooo!’

After two more rings, I switched the phone off, by which time the waiter had brought the bill. I paid him and asked Ekua if she was ready to leave. She shrugged and stood up, “let’s go”.She insisted on driving me home, even though it was quite a distance in the opposite direction from her house.

We sat in the car, parked outside my grandfather’s house where I stayed whenever I was in Accra.

We sat a while without speaking then she broke the silence….

“Yao, who was in your room with you the other day when I called you”?

“When”,? I answered back puzzled.

“Don’t lie Yao, I heard her voice, she said she was leaving because her sister had come”

‘Shieeeee! Chale I for think fast’, I thought to myself. I tried to look puzzled for a few more seconds to buy time…”Aaaaah, I remember, it was the bɔrla woman, she came to pick the bɔrla.”

Even before the words were out of my mouth, I knew I had ‘done some serious yawa…’

“Really!, bɔrla woman?..in your bedroom?…” Before she could go on, her phone rang…”Hello…”…she giggled a little before saying, “OK, I will be there soon”…and then replied “me too” to something else which was said on the line.

“I need to go, say hi to the bɔrla woman ok”, she sarcastically rounded up, before waiting for me to alight, before driving off…

It was almost midnight…

This episode is the season Finale, but don’t worry, unlike the Game of Thrones, there won’t be too much of a long wait…😀😀

Enjoy!

“Kofi!…kofi!!”…”Kofi! Kɔ dware wonti!”
There was never peace with these kids running all over the place. They were a family of five; two children, mum, dad and grandma. For me these were the most unfortunate of neighbours to share a compound with; there was never any space on the drying line to hang my laundry, and these kids were just too much trouble!

I opened the window, and the early morning sun beamed in…Kofi and his mother never failed to wake me up each morning. I picked my phone up and WhatsApped Ekua,

“Good morning dear”… then scrolled to Yayra,…”wake up”!

Ekua replied…, “Gm” and then was back offline.

Ekua seemed to be giving me a bit of a cold shoulder over the past couple of days; she didn’t WhatsApp as often as she used to, especially those first few days after our ‘breakup’. She had seemed so eager to make up for ‘hurting me’. Even when I was ignoring her calls that night, she kept at it, and the next day she had almost cried when we talked about it, begging me to let it go…

“Ɛnti afei adɛn?…why she start dey flex so? mtcheeew”…muttering under my breath and looking for my tooth brush, I rushed to reach the phone when it chirped again…But it wasn’t Ekua…It was Yayra…

“Morning handsome”

“Oh!…but this girl paa…abi I no sheda fine like that.”? I grinned to myself. I had found my toothbrush but now couldn’t find the toothpaste.

I texted Yayra back quickly and then headed for the shower.

After my encounter with Yayra, there were only two things which could have happened; either things would become very awkward between us, or we would become very close…We became close…so close in fact that I ran the unfortunate risk of being friend zoned; she talked to me everytime about her boyfriend…Kwame this…Kwame that…They still hadn’t made up and it had been a week since she had come into my room that evening.

Point is, I didn’t want to know about Kwame, unless of course it was about him hurting her again, and she needing comforting, which I was more than eager to give.

I came out of the shower and saw I had received another WhatsApp from Yayra,

“I’m going to town this morning, can you please give me a lift”?

I said it wasn’t a problem.

I had borrowed Karim’s car the previous day after work for a little drive about with Frank and the boys, and hadn’t yet returned it; he would pick it up after work today before I left for Accra.
The day went by quickly and soon it was five. I had just got off the phone with Ekua; she had finally called or rather returned my four unanswered calls from earlier on in the day. And it was a brief conversation too, she wanted to confirm if I would still be over for the weekend, since we already had planned to see one another. Then my phone chirped…

“I’m still in town, have you left”?

Yayra wanted to come over and see me at the office since I wouldn’t be around over the weekend.

Soon everyone else was gone, and I was left alone with the security man. It was almost half past 6, and I was still waiting for Yayra . I walked up to the window and then my phone chirped, “I’m outside ”

I asked the security man to allow her in and then we went to my office at the back. She gave me a hug and settled down in a seat, “I’m tired oo”. I asked her about how her day had been. I set about clearing my table as she told me about a very eventful day out running errands.

Being a Friday, there was bound to be some traffic before eight so we kept talking to while away the time…She had a lot to say, and thankfully nothing about Kwame.

I brought out some chocolates from the fridge and offered her a bar. She put a piece in her mouth and then offered me the rest of the bar. I shook my head, pointing at her mouth, “I want that one”

“Noooo”, it’s already in my mouth she said, and broke off another piece from the bar and put it in my mouth. I held her hand and sucked her fingers, then broke off another piece and placed it in her mouth, “I want that one”, I said again playfully, and she turned her face around laughing, ” I said noo”.

I leant forward towards her,… “what are you doing”?, she said without turning away. “I want the chocolate”, I said, and then without stopping to think, I kissed her. She pushed me back a little, but then paused a second as if to think of something and then kissed me back. I pulled her off the seat and leaned her up against the wall…There was a definite sense of unfinished business as we clung unto each other. I reached out and flicked the lights out with my right hand, whilst with my left I felt for the button on her jeans. She helped me out and loosened her belt, I felt around her for a moment before unzipping her trousers and gently sliding them down towards her knees, and then she did the rest. I led her gently away from the wall towards the table, so thankfully cleared already, and arched behind her. By then my trousers were already down over my knees.

As I thrust forward gently, her eyes bulged and she gave a gentle moan…
